Flint, MI—Said Dominique Strong’s “social worker instinct” when she waited for her son’s bus on a cold morning seven years ago.
“I noticed that some children had coats that were not buttoned or zipped up properly,” she said. “Some kids didn’t have hats. Some kids didn’t have gloves.”
Soon after that day, Strong and some friends launched Warming Bodies Through Love, an outreach campaign to get kids in Flint, Michigan. They need proper clothes to stay warm during winters.
That campaign continues seven years later as Strong and a handful of volunteers from her community organization, Uma Strong Marshall Outreach (USMO), spent much of their day Monday, November 21, 2022, distributing winter clothing to children who need They were needed. ,
“We are here to fill the gap for the betterment of the health and well-being of our Flint families,” she said. “We just want to be community builders.”
As the families paused in the Rosa Parks conference room at the Mass Transportation Authority (MTA) station in downtown Flint, Strong and her volunteers sifted through boxes of jackets, hats and gloves to find each child the right fit for them.
The USMO chose the MTA station to try to meet families where they already would be, Strong said.
For Sienna, the 13-year-old president of the USMO, who asked that her last name be removed from this article, the need to provide winter clothing at her school is clear, where she sometimes sees classmates arriving without a jacket. Told. She’s served with the USMO for almost two years and was promoted to the rank of president last summer.
“One time I gave a coat to a kid, and he came around the table, and he hugged me,” Sienna said. “That was a moment I still cherish. He was very excited.
The USMO, with support from the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, Genesee Health System, Target and others, expects to provide clothing to about 200 families during Monday’s giveaway, Strong said. Any leftovers go to Flint’s New Standards Academy, then it’s back to shopping for more.
